The PORTAGANTRY: at the heart of the renovation of the Musée national de la Marine
Commencing in October 2018, the Musée national de la Marine (National Maritime Museum) initiated an extensive renovation endeavour characterised by a remarkable logistical feat: the relocation of 3,800 historic artworks. Noteworthy in facilitating this delicate operation was the PORTAGANTRY from Reid Lifting, instrumental in transporting and installing the most imposing pieces.
TREASURES TO PRESERVE
Situated at the Trocadero in Paris, the Musée national de la Marine hosts an invaluable array of maritime artifacts, such as Napoleon I's ceremonial vessel and the Royal Louis, a scale model ship crafted around 1770. The refurbishment of the museum, its inaugural overhaul since inception, demanded a meticulous strategy for preserving and relocating these precious treasures.
THE CHALLENGE
The primary difficulty resided in securely moving the artworks, especially sizable pieces like the ornaments of the Réale, the admiral’s galley fleet under Louis XIV. This task demanded not just precision but also the use of advanced equipment.
THE SOLUTION: the PORTAGANTRY
To fulfil these criteria, BOVIS Fine Art utilised a PORTAGANTRY mobile gantry from the Reid Lifting collection for several significant pieces. Recognised for its strength and adaptability, this equipment facilitated the effortless handling of weighty and voluminous structures. Its capacity to navigate while bearing substantial loads played a pivotal role in positioning the artworks on their pedestals during the museum's renovation.
The main advantages of the PORTAGANTRY:
Lifting capabilities extend to 5 tons for cargo and ensure the safety of operators working at heights (up to 2,500kg for a maximum of 5 individuals).
Versatility: Designed for both lifting goods and personnel.
Adaptability: Multiple models are at your disposal to accommodate premises constraints, all adjustable in height (up to 2.9 m at the lifting ring).
Sturdiness: Anodised for heightened corrosion resistance.
The effectiveness of this operation underscores the significance of dependable and suitable equipment in overseeing art conservation projects. The PORTAGANTRY by Reid Lifting has proven its capacity to address extensive logistical hurdles, playing a crucial role in safeguarding and elevating cultural heritage.
